The paper vs plastic debate has been in the public consciousness for a long time. Environmentally-inclined lawmakers have favored the use of paper bags because of their seemingly low impact on the environment and have worked towards enacting laws to encourage their use. Boutiques and clothing stores use paper bags as a statement and the branding on these bags serves as free advertising. Plastic bags, however, have their own niche, such as storing food long-term by freezing them. These are also the optimal choice for disposing of expired food products and other kitchen undesirables. Neither can replace the utility of the other and it depends on the customer to make a conscious effort to make sure that these bags end up in the correct recycling facilities.
